Bianca Brundel, PhD
Bianca Brundel received her PhD from the University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands, and trained in molecular and cellular biology at VU Amsterdam and clinical pharmacology at UMC Groningen. Since 2016, she has been Professor of Physiology at Amsterdam UMC.
Her research focuses on understanding why atrial fibrillation develops and progresses, and how new therapies can be developed to improve prevention and treatment. Her laboratory combines experimental disease models with translational research approaches to identify novel therapeutic targets and move discoveries from the laboratory toward real-world applications and clinical studies.
Professor Brundel is passionate about bringing together science and the experiences of people living with atrial fibrillation. She leads Project CIRCULAR, a Dutch government-funded initiative developed through co-creation with individuals living with AF and patient organizations including StopAfib.org. She is co-author of the Nature Reviews Disease Primer on atrial fibrillation with Mellanie True Hills and international collaborators, and co-founder of the AFIP Foundation (Atrial Fibrillation Innovation Platform), which promotes collaboration between people with lived experience, researchers, and healthcare professionals to accelerate innovation and improve AF management.
